my American bf often volunteers to carry my bag. and i often refuse telling he would look funny (can you imagine him in sportswear with a brown leather portfolio ;)
perhaps i'm too oldschool?! Chinese around us seem not to care at all!
Still far better than carrying a men's bag, possibly the worst epidemic in Shanghai right now. ;-) Great Blog, btw.
